Whatever Wednesday: Snap! Crackle! Pop!

As a child, I did not eat a lot of special cereals. No, I got stuff like Corn Flakes, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, and Wheaties. I loved these cereals. In fact, they still hold a special comfort for me. Our son recently discovered the joys of talking Rice Krispies. He’s having a blast and I’m loving the fact that my kids are growing up enjoying the same cereals I did.

Our family had three kids. My parents rotated special months throughout the year. When it was YOUR “month,” you got to do cool stuff like ride in the front seat (provided you were old enough), get out of chores, and pick a special cereal. Yes, that’s right. ONCE every three months, we got to pick a special cereal just for us. I don’t think we had to share but I imagine we did most of the time because that’s just the way we were. (I know, kids who actually share! Doesn’t exist much anymore, does it?) Some of our favorites were Fruit Loops, Count Chocula, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs and Frosted Flakes. Yes, I know Frosted Flakes is essentially Corn Flakes with sugar on it but you see how dedicated we were?

So… what were your favorite childhood cereals? Any memories associated with them? Do you still indulge or eat them regularly? What about sharing them with your kids? I wanna hear!

Lucky Charms. Bad for you? Kinda sorta yes. Yummytastic? Absolutely! I LOVE any cereal with marshmallows. Always have. I eat them sparingly now that I’m an adult (it’s a “treat”) and yes, I have fed my son this horribly delish cereal too. He loves to pick out the marshmallows and eat them first (just like me!).

Snap, crackle pop…I thought you were referring to my spine right now…LOL…
I am 29 and STILL EAT Lucky Charms and Pop Tarts. We bought Fruit Loops last month and they just didn’t do a thing for me like the sugary goodness of marshmellowed out Lucky Charms. Mmmmm.

When I was little, my Papa took us camping and he had asked what cereal I wanted. I told him Lucky Charms because my parents refused to buy it for me. Note: I’ve never tried Lucky Charms before this point. The first morning on our trip, I woke up extra early because I was so excited to eat Lucky Charms. So my Papa poured me a bowl and when Iooked down, there were NO marshmellows. I was all “What. THE.” and my Papa laughed and pulled out a huge glass jar full of the marshmellows. He plucked every marshmellow out of the box!! It was the best bowl of marshmellows with a dash of the other stuff I’ve ever eaten 😉

Now, when I’m having a really bad PPD day, my husband will go out and buy me a box of Lucky Charms…to put a smile on my face when I start my day :)
